You can be an e-reader AND a "real life" bookstore... →
“I remembered then why I loved bookstores. It wasn’t so much because of the end game of buying a book or a magazine. Rather, it was the journey to that one book. It’s about being surrounded by like-minded people, who may love literature or just want a brief escape from reality.
No matter how much I love my NOOK, I will never get that feeling at home alone.”

Confession: I pretty much check my Tumblr when I’m procrastinating and need to stalk Edan. And then I’m rewarded with awesome quick posts like this one.

Write Place, Write Time: Emily St. John Mandel →
One of the things I love most about the internet is how I can get a peek into people’s lives. As an avid reader, I am fascinated by authors’ writing studios and reading habits and social engagements. Once in awhile I end up feeling a little disappointed (I’ll never forget seeing Rosemary Wells speak and hearing some well-intentioned but terribly prejudiced things come out of...
Pay Your Taxes? These 10 Companies Didn't →
After sending off the biggest check of my LIFE yesterday (which only covered half of what I owe in taxes—ah, the joy of being self-employed but still low income!), this enrages me. <grr> I know things are complicated and that I haven’t even begun to understand the tax laws, but I do know something’s wrong when behemoth companies are getting major tax breaks and I am...

April is the cruelest month [for migraines]... →
Here’s my most recent post for Migraine.com. It’s 9 AM and already the feedback is overwhelming—many migraineurs cope with weather- and allergy-related migraine, and April is a tough month for us.

Italics Mine: Bookstores →
italicsmine:
It seems like a lot of people who shop at Amazon believe that the site sells books more cheaply than your neighborhood bookstore out of the goodness of their hearts. Do these people get that Amazon loses money on their book sales? That the site hopes that when you go online to buy the new David…

MY VERY OWN BOOKSTORE →
Here’s a little something I sent some friends & family members yesterday, mainly because:
a) some of them don’t actually realize I have a place where they can buy books
b) none are as obsessed with my bookstore, Avid Bookshop, as I am
c) I am tired of getting my feelings bruised when people talk about picking up books on Amazon.com when I *think* they should know their friend...

Sometimes I wonder if part of the eager reception of the print-media-is-dead trend juggernaut ouroboros, aside from the obvious, is how much certain people who like books like to be the only person they know who likes books, or the person who loves books the most. They have a persona and they’re…

TREEHOUSE Kid & Craft: quality art supplies, yes... →
Confession:
I was (and am?) a cheap art supply junkie, and I’d NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BEFORE. It’s true that the few high-quality supplies I have (a beautiful pen/marker set from a friend, some lovely drawing pencils I love to look at but rarely use) have outlasted their cheap counterparts. But still I never much realized that the higher quality items are worth the cost.
I...
