MY VERY OWN BOOKSTORE
Here’s a little something I sent some friends & family members yesterday, mainly because:
a) some of them don’t actually realize I have a place where they can buy books
b) none are as obsessed with my bookstore, Avid Bookshop, as I am
c) I am tired of getting my feelings bruised when people talk about picking up books on Amazon.com when I *think* they should know their friend Janet has her very own small business that can help them get some, if not all, of their reading material
I know that people’s habits are resistant to change. I know I am in a small percentage of people who will go out of her way (and close to out of her budget) to support locally-owned businesses, particularly ones owned by friends and colleagues. But I do so hope that people choose to shift habits enough that they buy, say, 7 out of 10 books from Amazon and 3 out of 10 from me (instead of a straight 10/10 from Amazon, which is what the majority of my family and friends *seem* to do, though I could be wrong…).
Anywho, read on if you’d like. Thanks!
Dear friends & family:
Most of you know that I am now the official owner of my own small business, Avid Bookshop LLC. I incorporated in November 2009 and have been hosting book clubs, coordinating events, and being as involved as possible in the Athens arts & literary communities as possible. I continually seek out educational sessions about the book industry, bookselling trends, literature, working with the community, and more.
Though I’m still working toward opening a dedicated storefront for the bookstore (which should happen this spring or summer now that our last hurdle has almost been jumped—hooray!), I want you to know that my business is up and running online. My website offers for sale virtually any book in print as well as CDs and DVDs. Looking for a used title? We have those too. Access both the new book webstore and the used book site by visiting my store’s homepage: http://www.avidbookshop.com
I’ve had the webstore up and running for months, but I’ve not promoted it much until recently. A very dear friend of mine only realized it existed last month, which showed me that I needed to promote the site to my friends and family more assertively. I hope this email will encourage you to buy a book from me. I can offer recommendations for any reader of any age, so send me an email if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. I also offer personalized book club services for people whose clubs are looking for some great, discussion-enhancing reads!
I know that you can buy your books at any number of places. I know that it’s easy and cheap for you to buy on Amazon, and I know that much of the joy of book buying is in browsing the aisles of a physical store—heck, that’s why I want to get my doors open ASAP! But until you can visit my physical storefront to browse, you can support me personally and professionally by buying a book or two on my website. I would be so grateful if you’d buy your next book (or four!) from AvidBookshop.com.
Thanks so much.
Please email or call if you want to talk about the bookstore or books, or if you’d just like to catch up!
Love,
Janet
P.S. Please excuse the mass email—I started to send this to one person at once but realized it was not an efficient use of time. In the words of Willy Wonka, “There’s so much time and so little to do. Strike that—reverse it!” :)************************
