Write Place, Write Time: Emily St. John Mandel
One of the things I love most about the internet is how I can get a peek into people’s lives. As an avid reader, I am fascinated by authors’ writing studios and reading habits and social engagements. Once in awhile I end up feeling a little disappointed (I’ll never forget seeing Rosemary Wells speak and hearing some well-intentioned but terribly prejudiced things come out of her mouth), but usually I remain intrigued with my favorite authors.
Emily Mandel is the author of a couple of books I’ve probably touted to you before—if you didn’t hear about her from me, you probably have heard of her elsewhere in the indie bookseller circuit, as she’s a favorite. I’ve met her in person a couple of times and really like her, so that’s a plus. Here she gives us a glimpse of her writing room along with descriptions of why she surrounds herself with particular objects and images. Enjoy!
I do almost all of my work in a small off-white room with a wooden floor and soft lighting. In the interests of full disclosure, it’s usually considerably messier than what you see in the pictures, and I’ve since acquired a more comfortable desk chair.
